The first UK trial of the Viagra® treatment, also known as the “little blue pill”, will be published soon.
The drug, called Sildenafil, is the first in a class of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Viagra is a prescription medication for men who have erectile dysfunction.
The trial, known as the “little blue pill”, will test the drug in men who have erectile dysfunction and have a history of cardiovascular disease. Viagra, with a reported effectiveness of 4.5 per cent in men with a history of cardiovascular disease, is not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Viagra is the drug’s first drug to treat impotence, but it was originally developed by Eli Lilly. Viagra is only available in two doses: 1mg and 2mg.
In March, the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, announced that a study was in the works in which they analysed Viagra and found that men who took the drug had a higher incidence of impotence than men who did not take the drug. It also found that Viagra was more effective for men who had erectile dysfunction than for men who did not have erectile dysfunction.
The trial’s lead author, Dr David Healy, said: “Erectile dysfunction is a complex issue. Men who take Viagra are more likely to have problems getting or keeping an erection than men who do not take the medication. This is because they have more blood flow to the penis than men who do not have erectile dysfunction, and they may feel more confident in their abilities.
“Our group is currently testing the efficacy of sildenafil in men who have erectile dysfunction and are taking the medication. There are several studies on the efficacy of sildenafil in men who are on treatment for erectile dysfunction.
“The results of our study will be published in the March issue of the British Medical Journal (BMJ).”
It was first reported that the drug has an effect in men with a history of heart disease and that the drug has an effect on blood flow to the penis in men with cardiovascular disease. Viagra is the first drug in the category, which means the drug can have an effect on blood flow to the penis, too, although it is not approved for use in men with heart disease.
The drug will be available in three doses and will be taken at the same time of day, either at bedtime or during the night. It is also recommended that men with heart disease take Viagra at a low dose and not more than one pill in 24 hours, although this is not advised in men taking nitrates.
In the trial, there was a 4.5 per cent difference between the two groups. It was the first study of this kind to show that the drug is safe for use in men with erectile dysfunction.
A review of the evidence for safety of the drug, however, has found no evidence of an increased risk of side effects or a decrease in sexual desire for men taking it. The side effects associated with the drug, which include the common side effects of the drug, such as chest pain, may have occurred in less than 1 per cent of users of the drug in the previous year.
In a separate review, a review of the evidence for safety of Viagra in the UK found that the drug was effective in men with erectile dysfunction, and it was not associated with increased sexual desire.
The trial is being conducted in two cities, Bristol and Nottingham, and will involve four men, of whom two have already completed their studies, and four have not.
The trial is designed to test the drug in men who have erectile dysfunction. The men will be given either a single dose of the drug or a placebo in a laboratory setting. The results of the trial will be used to develop a treatment plan.
The drug is being tested in over 50,000 men, and is to be launched in November next year.
Viagra is available without prescription in the UK, and is available for over half of all prescriptions over the counter in the UK. It is also available in pharmacies. Viagra is only prescribed for men with erectile dysfunction, and should not be used by women or children.
Dr Healy added: “We are very confident that the trial will be of great benefit to men with erectile dysfunction and that sildenafil, and its active ingredient, have an effect on blood flow to the penis in men with erectile dysfunction.
